SAY NO TO DEVELOPMENT – YES TO NATURE

The SELLICKS WOODLANDS and WETLANDS ACTION NETWORK say any plan for the future of Sellicks Beach must prioritise the urgent need to reverse biodiversity loss and protect our community from the effects of climate change.

SWWAN OPPOSE the Sellicks Beach development because the plan does not address the threats of climate change or biodiversity loss, will make no difference to the housing crisis and would ruin the quality of Sellicks Beach life for the current community and future generations.

THE DEVELOPMENT PLAN:

  • Does nothing to address the immediate, acute and harmful housing crisis problems associated with rental availability and cost
  • More than doubles the population of Sellicks Beach adding over 4000 people, but adds less than 0.5% to Adelaide’s 30-year housing stock
  • Require major infrastructure upgrades at significant community cost.
  • Ignores the existential threats of biodiversity loss and climate change
  • Isolates the Aldinga Conservation Park from other habitats and wildlife populations and increases the potential of contamination and damage to the Aldinga Washpool.
  • Increase urban heat problems for current residents.

SWWAN PROPOSE a Nature Reserve be built on the land instead to preserve the only habitat connection between Aldinga Conservation Park and the Hills and Fleurieu, and to protect current residents from urban heat and quarry dust, and improve their quality of life.

BUILDING A NATURE RESERVE WILL:

  • Increase biodiversity in the area benefitting the environment, agriculture and home gardeners alike.
  • Rebuild important diverse habitat across multiple ecosystems linking Aldinga Scrub and the Wetlands to the Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula
  • Prepare our community to deal with climate change by keeping Sellicks Beach cooler.
  • Protect the community from quarry dust by slowing winds and acting as a filter.
  • Benefit the local economy with investment and local jobs in conservation and tourism
  • Build resilience into agricultural ecoservices protecting jobs communities and food security
